I have always wanted to know where the origin of of term “Jeep” began.  Here is what I found out through several Jeep websites.  Apparently, it has been debated for many years on its origin.  Some people believe “Jeep” was a phonetic pronunciation or “slurring” of the abbreviation, “GP”, which meant, “general purpose” or “Government purposes”.  It is exactly the same way that the contemporary HMMWV (High Mobility multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle) has become known as the Humvee.
